Tyler Gage (CHANNING TATUM) has grown up all his life on the rough streets of the city, and he knows he’s unlikely to ever make it out of there. But after a brush with the law lands Tyler with a community-service gig at the city’s Maryland School of the Arts, everything changes. That’s when he meets Nora (JENNA DEWAN), the school’s prima ballerina, an alluring diva who is desperately searching for someone to replace her injured partner before the school’s all-important Senior Showcase. Spying Tyler’s moves, Nora can’t help but notice he’s got a raw but natural gift. She decides to take a chance on Tyler, but as they begin to train, the tension between them, and their polar-opposite backgrounds, skyrockets. The only thing standing between Tyler and the void are his dreams of making it off the streets -- and the only thing standing in the way of Nora’s obviously brilliant future is the Senior Showcase. Now, with everything on the line, Tyler will have just one performance to prove to Nora, and to himself, that he can step up to a life far larger than he ever imagined.

A teen gal from a hood in Baltimore experiences pressure, after her Mom dies. Her Mom’s best friend, at Mom’s deathbed, agrees to be Andie’s “guardian” (although no lawyer-brokered legal documents apparently exist). Her attempts at providing Andie a normal family environment collides with Andie’s “hood” family, headed by “Tuck” (Thomas), a sort of combination of “first among equals” and “alpha-male.” Due to irregularities, especially an impromptu dance theatre on a subway train, which is caught on film and shown on local tv news, the guardian determines to send Andie to Texas to relatives there. Bummer! Andie seems in danger of loosing both her familes. However, at a local favorite dance club, legendary “streets” dancer, “Tyler Gage” (Channing Tatum), shows up, dances with old hood gal, Andie, in a “duel 4 school” bet. Tyler wins, and Andie reports to “MSA,” a Maryland dance school, to fill out an application. She is noticed by a lad who just seems to be the same mysterious boy she eyed briefly at the club the other evening. Little does she know that he’s none other than “Chase Collins (Hoffman),” whose family founded MSA and whose brother, “Blake” (Kemp), presently runs the place. Although her “try out” is energetic, the judges, led by Blake, halt her routine, disdaining her lack of discipline. She’s about ready to “pack it in,” when Chase quietly intervenes to persuade his brother to let her stay. For Andie this is seemingly good news, as it allows her to remain in B-Town with her guardian and hood families. Little does she realize that it is a move that is going to move her on up a notch in life’s maturation. The film continues to watch Andie, as she develops new friends in her new environment. Firstly, she meets “Moose,” who serves to verbally identify the other key figures in her new environment, not least of which being Chase (”he’s a player”). There is a clash between Andie’s obligations in regard to school and her obligation to her dance crew in the hood. When she’s forced to dance-work after school by dance-tyrant Blake, she misses too many street practices, and Tuck gives her walking-papers (”you’re out!”). Now, Andie has lost her hood family. Chase and Moose basically conspire to convince Andie that they should form a crew from themselves and a potpouri of dancing rebels at MSA. They tap the talents of the likes of : “Monster” (Luis Rosada), “Smiles” (LaJon Dantzler), “Fly” (Janelle Cambridge), and a few other good dancers. They practice & bond, and Andie is discovering she has a new family being born at good old MSA. Chase wants to take their act to the club, where the best acts are featured, such as Tuck’s legendary “410.” The night of the dance came. They performed. Alas, the club did not give them its love. In fact they are booed bigtime. Tails between their legs, they sloughed back to MSA, where they lick their wounds. An old friend from the hood drops by and tells them they can get their “street respect” back. They are down now, but what goes down can also go up. Chase has an idea. The result proves very embarassing to Tuck. There is bad blood, Tuck and some hoodies rough up Chase. Andie doesn’t like this. Chase and Andie clearly have developed “something.” Whatever it is, its much slower than their dancing. At the urging of pride and in opposition to prejudice, the MSA crew decides to go to the “streets,” the legendary superbowl of B-Town wiggling & rolling. A text message is received by Andie that the date, time, and location of the “dance-off” was set. It was time to “step up 2 the streets.” She sent messages to her new crew. They gather for the dance rumble. The moviegoer witnesses some energetic acts. Then when Andie & Chase try to lead their crew to the dance floor, there is opposition plus. They don’t belong! Andie works her way to the DJ podium and takes the mike from the “fly” DJ. She gives a rousing plea for her crew’s cause, issues a challenge, and her crew takes it to the streets, where it all began. They do their thing. The moviegoer may wish to check this film out to see how they did.
